Stories of Survival: Denise Crooker

SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT - Denise Crooker, Crooker Team Captain

KTT Denise CrookerHi. I am Denise Crooker.

My husband and I started this journey September 10, 2015 with my routine check up at Wendi Logan in Rochester. I never miss my yearly exam  because I have a family history of breast cancer. My mother died at the age of 42 of breast cancer and my older sister was diagnosed four years ago and she is doing great. I was shocked and broken hearted to learn that I had breast cancer. I had recently had genetic testing and that all came back negative. So, at Wendi Logan when they said that I needed a biopsy on my right breast and would contact me the following day with the results, I was very concerned. Well as lack of luck would have it, I am the one out of eight who can have negative genetic testing and develop breast cancer. With such a strong family history of cancer, my husband Jim and I decided that a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction was our best plan to attack the cancer. After sixteen chemo treatments, I am now getting set for 28 radiation treatments. My doctors warned us that this was going to be a long road. I still have a ways to go but the road is getting shorter with each week.  I could not have done this without my family, my friends, and my husband. Jim has been with me at every appointment and chemo treatment. I was introduced to Harolyn Giordano, CFm, at The Pink Boutique at the YWCA in Elmira (also a Komen Twin Tiers grantee). They have been so helpful for all the things I needed after my surgeries.  I have been blessed to have so many friends and family that have prayed for me, sent cards, and have called or stopped at home for a visit. I know God was by my side every step of this journey.
